Detail Your Own Car to Save Money

Shine up your car without spending a fortune at the garage.

Now that summer is right around the corner, it’s time to revive your vehicle from the winter weather and spruce it up for spring! Although many motorists choose to take their vehicle to a special shop and fork out a small fortune on a deep clean and detail, you can save money by DIY detailing your own car! Here are some tips to get you started: Wash the exterior - Grab a bucket of soapy water, a sponge, and get to it! Don’t forget to wash the easy-to-miss spots like the roof, wheels, and mud flaps. Spray off the lather with a hose and towel dry for the best finish. Wax it - It can take more than just a wash to get the paint clean. Wax absorbs stains and small scratches before those hazards make it to the paint. Whether you prefer paste wax or liquid, coat your car’s exterior to protect the paint. Clean the windows - Find a glass cleaner without ammonia, which most household glass cleaners container. Ammonia is bad for vinyl upholstery and the instrument panel. Buff the glass with a microfiber cloth, which does a great job of getting rid of cleaner residue. Scrub the tires - Use a non-acid-based tire cleaner to strip residue from your tires, as well as to get the stubborn brake dust off wheels with a non-acid product. Acid-based cleaners can cause bare alloy wheels to oxidize and pit, and they can damage wheels painted with color or clear coatings. Vacuum - Pull out the floor mats and your Hoover! Vacuum the floors, seats (push all the way forward and back to get underneath), and every nook and cranny that dust and debris can settle in. Interior Wipe Down - Get a bucket of warm water and a rag to wipe down the dashboard, interior of the doors, and the center console. Once that is complete and dry, wipe it all down again with automobile disinfectant wipes.
