Homeowner Tasks You Didn’t Know You Should Be Doing

Don't overlook these essential home maintenance tasks.

When you think about home maintenance, these few tasks might not be the first things that come to mind. There are some jobs that homeowners forget about or don't even know about. However, forgetting about them can have frustrating and potentially expensive consequences. Here are a few tasks to add to your list. Test the sump pump It's easy to forget about your sump pump - until you need it. Forgetting to test your sump pump could result in a flood, which can be hard and costly to recover from. Be sure that your sump pump has a vertical float switch. Also, check it a couple of times a year by putting water into the basic to make sure everything is working properly. Clean dryer vents A dryer that has accumulated a lot of lint is a red flag. If the lint so much as catches a spark from the dryer, you could be looking at a dangerous house fire. Clean refrigerator coils Refrigerator coils are located on the back of the fridge or across the bottom. Over time, they can become clogged with dust, pet hair, and cobwebs so that they can't efficiently release heat. This means that your compressor has to work harder and longer than it was designed to, using more energy and shortening the life of your fridge. Make sure to clean the coils often with a coil-cleaning brush and vacuum. When the worst happens, make sure that you can fall back on your homeowners insurance.
